Excellent diy project Review by J-Modified
I finished assembly of my amplifier a few days ago and wanted to comment on my findings. First, I purchased this kit because I wanted a project to do. I have rebuilt A pair of Dynaco MKiii's in the past and wanted to try my hand at the class d amps. I am using this to run my mains in a home theatre application, using the Pioneer Elite vsx-49txi as my control center. I have this amp running a pair of Klipsch Klf-20's with external crossovers using erse inductors, clarity cap sa's and some russian teflons. For source i am using a Cambridge 640c v2 cd player with solid silver interconnects that i built at home.
On to my experience with the sds258. I had a couple of days to get a chassis ready so i purchased a 17x10x3 powder coated steel chassis and all of my hardware from Antique Electronic Supply. The case fit the transformer, power supply ,
and amp board nicely. The sound is very detailed , fast, clean,
and dynamic. I was stunned at the bass articulation, much tighter and more controlled than running off the receiver. The midrange is clean and vocals are not stressed at all. Sounds very natural. The highs are also very smooth. The kit is dead quiet, no hum, clicks or pops. Background is black, black, black!
After listening to the Chesky Audiophile test disk (a great reference disk for evaluating audio equipment) I will say that I am already planning to add another module for my center speaker and one for the rears.
Tom was very professional and helpful when i had questions,
shipping was fast and packaging was excellent.
I am by no means an equipment reviewer or electrical engineer. Great thing about Tom's kit is you dont have to be.
Thanks Tom for offering affordable solutions to people that enjoy the build and love the listening. (Posted on 4/2/11)
